Back in 1946, a family owned business known as Locust Hardware was already faithfully serving contractors and home owners of this community. In the years between, time has brought many changes, but not so in our unwavering commitment to the best interest of our patrons, now as always, our first consideration.

Hayden Vanderburg started it all when he bought Locust Hardware Company in 1960. Asking his wife, Dot, to quit her job in Cannon Mills and come to work with him, they joined forces birthing a family owned business today known as Southgate Masonry and Lumber. After Hayden's untimely death, Dakeita Vanderburg Johnson decided to join her mother and cousins Alan and Phil Helms and work for the family business.

In a spirit of progress, Locust Hardware moved into it's new showroom, Southgate Masonry and Lumber in 2002.

The heritage that is ours... is proven character.

"... When I was a young man of about twenty four years of age, I visited Locust Hardware and talked to Hayden Vanderburg about supplying materials for a new house. I asked if he would supply materials until I could obtain the money from a local Savings and Loan. He assured me there would be no problem. From that day until today the folks at Locust Hardware and Southgate have always had a positive 'yes we can' attitude... "
